Quella raffigurata, con la minuziosità che caratterizza l’arte di Cavaglieri, è la Chiesa parigina di Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois situata davanti la facciata est del Louvre.

Di epoca merovingia, venne abbattuta dai Vichinghi e ricostruita tra gli inizi del Duecento e la fine del Cinquecento. Dopo essere stata depredata e danneggiata durante la Rivoluzione Francese rischiò di essere abbattuta per far spazio ad un colonnato per il Louvre.

Nel 1831, durante l’anniversario dell’omicidio di Carlo di Borbone-Francia, gli antimonarchici la danneggiarono notevolmente. Successivamente Lassus e Viollet-le-Duc restaureranno la chiesa.

Haussmann, durante i cambiamenti urbanistici salvò nuovamente la chiesa ma spianò buona parte degli edifici limitrofi. In tale luogo Hittorff costruì, quindi, alla sinistra un edificio con facciata gemella, raccordata da un porticato ed una torre campanaria neogotica per la sede del I arrondissement.

Quest’ultimo è proprio il lato propostoci da Cavaglieri.

Pictured, with the meticulousness that characterises Cavaglieri’s art, is the Parisian Church of Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois located in front of the east façade of the Louvre.

From the Merovingian period, it was demolished by the Vikings and rebuilt between the beginning of the 13th century and the end of the 16th century. After being plundered and damaged during the French Revolution, it risked being pulled down to make way for a colonnade for the Louvre.

In 1831, during the anniversary of the assassination of Charles de Bourbon-France, anti-monarchists damaged it considerably. Lassus and Viollet-le-Duc later restored the church.

Haussmann, during the town planning changes again saved the church but levelled most of the neighbouring buildings. On this site, Hittorff then built a building with a twin façade to the left, connected by an arcade and a neo-Gothic bell tower for the headquarters of the 1st arrondissement.

The latter is precisely the side proposed to us by Cavaglieri.
