Lo sguardo si perde seguendo questo saliscendi delle colline toscane.

Le balze volterrane sono uno spettacolo unico che chiunque dovrebbe vedere almeno una volta nella vita.

Questi verticalismi sublimi che tanto avevano ammaliato Scatizzi, sono dovuti ai crolli delle pareti argillose sgretolatesi a causa delle infiltrazioni delle acque.

Quello che affascina sono i calanchi, ammirabili anche in altre zone italiane, basti pensare ad esempio della piccola e deliziosa cittadina di Civita di Bagnoregio nel viterbese. Civita è stata pertanto ribattezzata “la città che muore”, proprio perché sorta su una collina argillosa che lentamente si sgretola, esattamente come vediamo nelle nostre balze volterrane.

In questi paesaggi unici possiamo ancora assaporare quel senso di infinito e quiete, tanto decantati da poeti e scrittori di tutti i tempi.

One’s gaze wanders as one follows the ups and downs of the Tuscan hills.

The balze of Volterra are a unique spectacle that anyone should see at least once in their lifetime.

These sublime verticalisms that had so enchanted Scatizzi, are due to the collapse of the clay walls crumbled by the infiltration of water.

What is fascinating are the gullies, which can also be admired in other parts of Italy, such as the small and delightful town of Civita di Bagnoregio in the Viterbo area. Civita has therefore been renamed ‘the dying town’, precisely because it was built on a clayey hill that slowly crumbles away, exactly as we see in our crags of Volterra.

In these unique landscapes, we can still savour that sense of infinity and tranquillity so extolled by poets and writers of all times.
